Earlier this month, PartyPoker changed their play money chip policy and imposed chip stack caps to non-real money player accounts.

Party Poker play money chip counts can now only reach a maximum of 250,000 play chips.

PartyPoker’s decision to cap the play money accounts has caused somewhat of an upheaval amongst loyal play money chip players at PartyPoker.com, many of whom had amassed virtual fortunes only to wake up the next morning to find their hard earned free chips cut right down to a meagre P$250,000.

The official statement via their blog went along these lines: “We recently implemented a new policy that restricts play money accounts to a maximum number of chips. This decision has the vast majority of our play money players in mind, and is intended to stop the transferring of chips from account-to-account outside of regular hands of poker… Although this may have affected some play money players in the short term, the decision was made in the interest of our play money games and the fair play benefits it will bring. We will not reverse our decision.”

PokerStars have broken the Guinness World Record for the largest online poker tournament twice in one year. In July 2009 Full Tilt Poker made an attempt to beat the PokerStars December 2008 record (35,000 players), by hosting a 50,000 capped tournament with a $5 buy-in. Poker Stars held a $1 tournament on the same day which had a 65,000 maximum player limit both tournaments were full before starting time.

On the 27th December 2009 PokerStars made another attempt and hosted a uncapped tournament with a $300,000 guaranteed prize pool. The tournament had a staggering 149,196 players registered, a drastic improvement of more than double their previous Guinness World Record.

Great poker news for USA players is that the Bush administrations UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) which was set to be enforced from 1st December 2009 is expected to be pushed back by a further six months until 1st June 2010.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is expected announce tomorrow (Friday) or at the latest Monday, that the U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has agreed to delay the compliance date as set out by the Poker Players Alliance’s petition which aimed for a full years grace to be given a comprise was reached and a rumoured 6 month extension granted.

Under the UIGEA, banks and credit card processors are held responsible for ensuring that no “illegal” Internet gambling money transfers occur, which would severely dent the USA poker market as no Americans would be able to play for real money, if the law was enforced. It would also prove difficult to cash out their winnings.

Once again the record books need to be updated as the previous record for the largest online poker pot was once again smashed by a monster pot of $1,356,946.50.
This time around the hand included well known poker pro Patrik Antonius and unknown Swede “Isildur1“, prior to the hand both players were stacked at a high stakes $500/$1000 Pot Limit Omaha game at Full Tilt with Isildur1 having about $678k and Antonius approximately $1.26 million.
